Citi Bike Shatters Ridership Record
Citi Bike set a new all-time record in August of over 205,000 rides taken in a single day across New York City, with 66% of them taken on an ebike. That’s the equivalent of more than 507,000 miles (815,000 km) traveled and nearly 60,000 hours in the saddle. This milestone underscores how North America’s largest bikeshare system continues to drive sustainable, high-demand urban mobility.
Bikeshare highlights from around the world
- 🇪🇸 Barcelona’s Bicing completed its expansion, bringing the fleet to 8,000 bikes, including 5,000 ebikes, along with 30 new stations that strengthen connections between neighborhoods.
- 🇺🇸 Lyft and the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) are expanding the Divvy system in Chicago, adding 750 new docks downtown to improve availability in high-demand areas. Riders will also benefit from greater flexibility with a new feature that lets them pause ebike trips for up to 15 minutes.
- 🇫🇷 Clermont-Ferrand has seen bike ridership grow by 55% between 2018 and 2024. In response to this growing demand, the city has announced a 2026 expansion of its C.Vélo bikeshare system, adding 23 new stations to the fleet.
- 🇨🇦 Québec’s àVélo bikeshare system reached an impressive milestone of one million trips before mid-season, highlighting the system’s growing popularity and the city’s rising momentum for cycling.
- 🇨🇦This summer has been record-breaking for Bike Share Toronto, with over 1.1 million trips in August alone, the highest monthly total ever.
- 🇲🇽 Mexico City’s Ecobici system recorded more than 25,000 trips during rush hour. According to the Ministry of Mobility, 67% of users ride to work or school, with an average trip time of 17 minutes.
