Why is bike-sharing up 20% in Europe? Here is the question our experts explored during a panel discussion at Autonomy Mobility World Expo in Paris. We're delighted to share the highlights of this discussion, focusing on the evolution of bike-sharing as a sustainable mode of urban transport, reshaping European mobility.
Data revealed that Montreal’s BIXI electric bikes are used 30% more frequently than mechanical bikes, while representing 25% of the fleet. Furthermore, BIXI announced a new expansion of its system. An additional 1,300 bikes and 32 stations will be added to the fleet in spring 2024, bringing the impressive total to around 11,300 bikes and nearly 900 stations.
"There has been a clear demand for e-bikes," said Mirte Mallory, Apsen We-cycle's Executive Director. To meet this strong demand for bike-sharing and especially electric bikes, the We-Cycle scheme is set to grow. Two expansions are planned for 2024 and 2025. This year, nearly a hundred bikes, most of which are electric, will be added to the fleet.
In 2023, POGOH reached a new milestone recording over 1 million rides since its launch in 2015. As a result, the system has unveiled its "Phase 3" expansion plan, which involves introducing more than 50 new stations in Pittsburgh over the next few years.
With the upcoming àVélo season starting on May 1st in Quebec City, 520 bikes along with 41 new stations will be added to the fleet, for a total number of 1,300 bikes and 115 stations. This expansion will extend service to three new city’s neighborhoods, much to the delight of Quebec's residents and tourists alike.
